"Because I left." Gabe says it to the sand beneath them instead of to Caleb. The ocean sings behind him, promising a place where Caleb can't follow. He stuffs his hands into his hoodie pocket to hide them shaking.

He looks back up at Caleb for a half-second before flicking his eyes back down. "What are you doing here."
