Profile (History and Family)

Gabriel Bartholomew Fletcher is the seventh child of twelve, born to a close-knit, fundamentalist Christian family. His parents ascribed to Quiverfull philosophy, believing God’s will was the only family planning they needed and that they should want as many children as arrows in a quiver. To that end, his father worked as primary winner while his mother spent all of her time at home, helping to raise the children. Because his mother was pregnant several times after his own birth, Gabe was raised largely by his sister Temperance. Under Temperance’s guidance, he took care of his household assignments and was completely homeschooled. As Gabe grew older, it became his job to care for his younger siblings, Uriel and Charity.

Life in the Fletcher household was always tightly regimented. Children were recognized as future church members and contributors to the household. To this end, they were all homeschooled and lived under an exacting moral code. Boys were always expected to dress in long pants and collared shirts and girls never bared their shoulders and wore ankle-length skirts at the shortest. To avoid immodesty and temptation, the family never went to waterparks or the beach, meaning none of them had opportunity to learn their siren heritage, long buried. Discipline was equally important and strict in the household with time outs, spankings, prayer, and other punishments; in an attempt to stop Gabe’s nail biting habit, for instance, his mother would dip his fingers in chili oil.

All of his socialization outside of his family came through their local church, where he was known for his exquisite singing voice. It was on a trip with the church choir to a local competition that Gabe realized something wasn’t right. Rooming with Caleb, one of his only friends outside of the family, Gabe was horrified to realize he was attracted to the other boy. On the last night of their trip, Caleb kissed him and things became heated as they got into the shower together. Once the lust cleared, Gabe short-circuited.

Unable to reconcile everything he knew about his universe with what had just happened, Gabe went into a fugue state, packed up, and paid a for a bus ticket. Once he woke up, he was getting off in Siren Cove.
